Aare companies using this site to advertise?
'Sainsbury's' and 'Hogheads Pubs' spring to mind, why would anyone choose to use a supermarket for their name? Do these askers represent the companies that they take their names from?
One way that search engines rank you is according to outside links, etc. so the more your company or web site is listed in blogs, etc. the better for your rankings. This is true especially if the blog is relevant to your site.
We know a lot about whiteboards, chalkboards and bulletin boards and we find that a lot of people have questions about these same products so it gives us a chance to advertise our sites but also to help out at the same time.
Hope that this answers your question.

I don't think corporate advertising is rife on here.

Yes, companies use this for marketing purposes. The best way to market a product or service is to establish yourself as the expert in that undustry. It is the same concept as writing a book, news release, etc.
More toward the company name questions part though, there are many reasons that companies use similar names. Take one example of Brute Sports company and the Brute Cologne company. The both basically have the same name and even for similar reasons. They sometimes work in tight cooperation to keep the brand safe from outsiders. Plus, there are a limited number of what might be effective names for companies and their brands. See the reference listed here for picking company names.

Sainsburys never answer any questions but ask a lot, so they are genuine and using this site for advertising and market research, ideas etc.
