Advertising for a new business?

I'm planning on starting a gift basket business for the holidays. How can I get started on the advertising?? will flyers be a good idea?

flyers are fine.. one idea is to find a local church with a youth program, and see if they will have the kids distribute the flyers in neighborhoods for a reasonable fee, and offer discounts to the church members, and maybe donate a few for the actual church itself for a charity raffle if they have such a thing.

1) Take multiple approaches. Make up fliers on your computer and print out a few and mail to homes in nice upscale neighborhoods, and to businesses. Many businesses give baskets because it makes their job easier.

Make a list of who you sent to. Do a follow up call to those business and see who there would handle this purchase and talk with them if you can. Write down their name for future calls.

You can have the fliers printed commercially less expensive than you can do it; so when you are happy with the brochure then send it out to be done. Don't print bunches of them up front just to find you have an error and have to trash them, or you change your direction and have to change them. And since this is a new venture, don't hesitate to get at least 50% of your money on placement of the order. New companies cannot take a large hit if the client cancells the order. And don't leave the baskets without full payments. Some companies think nothing of taking 90 days to pay. And cover yourself by having a (small print) disclaimer that substitute in the basket will be made due to availability of products.

Good luck, but to be honest you are starting rather late. A lot of your potential clients have already made arrangements.

2)Send out press releases about your company's start up. You might not get anything, but you may get some mention on the radio or in the newspaper.

3) tie your company with a chartity, Give 10% to a local charity and that sometimes help with recognition. Talk to your favorite local charity and see if they will work with passing out your forms.

4) Go to some art-craft, business, shows. Sell a few baskets but pass out your brochure. Have a drawing for a free basket for your mailing list.

5) see if you can set a basket and some brochures in business that you normally deal with (beautician, dentist, vets), and make the baskets fit their business. And remember people will spend more on their dog than their kids....ha

6) If you have any kids in schools, talk with some of the clubs in the school who might want a percent to sell for you as a fund raisers. You may need to raise you prices to cover their percents.

7) Put up brochures in places that have public bulletin boards. Like antique malls, etc.

Yellow pages but you have to do at least a quater page ad. It will do you good. first cause when I go to the yellow pages the first ones I look at are the bigger ones, then if those don't go through the next smaller ones. Plus I did a maid service biz. and started getting calls everyday because of yellow pages, with a quarter page ad!
