Absolutely.........Madison Ave at its best. Mega dollars go into advertising that tries to manipulate us. Other ways too...such as the racks of magazines, the boxes of candy at the checkout counters. We really need to put blinders on our eyes, and watch what we hear..........all this is a form of mind control or brainwashing. We need almost NOTHING of what Madison Ave promotes.......NOTHING. |

Yes. I think at times I buy because I think I need it. It usually is a want. I really do not need much more than and a roof over my head, food and someone to love. With that I shall be fine. |

No I do not. Crappy advertising creates false needs.
Good marketing finds people who already have a need and then helps them fulfill it. The essence of good marketing is discoverability - being in front of the customer when THEY need YOU, not vice-versa.
Saying advertising is manipulative is easy, but it's a very incomplete answer.
I just wrote a piece on this (see below). |

Yes, advertising is manipulative. I think most advertisers would agree with this too. That's the whole point of advertising: to manipulate ppl into wanting your product. |

I think that has a mixed answer, it depends on the product being advertised. I am a marketing specialist. I do the marketing for an Auto Repair Shop. Our business is a necessity, therefor, no it is not manipulative, we advertise a service that is needed. In my marketing, I point out the "extra" services we provide on top of the auto repair needed. There is no manipulation. On other products that are not a necessity, sure there is some manipulation. But, on clothing and other personal/hygiene items, I would say advertising is a form of persuasion, not manipulation. |

Hi,
I disagree.
Marketing overall awakens the needs people have in their life's. Now and in the future.
It does not cheat people to buy things they do not want, instead it emphases the feeling that they already have/had and pursue them to act.
Hope this helps,
Best,
