Once you have a tape / file/ recording......you will need to badger every recording label out there.again again and again.
remember they want to make money and want a return from there invested dollars from marketing and promoting you.

I think first place is know what type of singer you want to be and be honest about your ability. Friends/neighbours aren't good guide you need a professional to hear you. Depending on your age unless you have a trained voice you would need to get one! If you do have the ability and dedication needed then look at first steps.....join local choir etc. If you want to become a "popstar" well that different! For advertising if youre unknown then that hard, get yourself a website and add short downloads off your music, cut some demo tapes, get in contact with local record shops, get to know local band venue and other musicians. |

Try starting by singing at open mic nights, and Karaoke. If your really serious make a demo and shop it to labels. * But* if your really want it, you have to know the business. |

This depends on how much money you have to spend. Start locally. Get some good pitch material from somewhere like Elance and pitch your story to the media. Local media like local stories, especially if it is a rags to riches or determination story.
Then you could self promote through iTunes. I started my own radio show http://www.AngieMilhous.com/Listen.html for essentially nothing but a microphone, digital recorder and a free month of software.
Then I placed ads on Google and Yahoo. Pretty inexpensive but you have to watch your daily spending limit.
Look for a local music Yahoo group. Or go to a local music store. Most of them have experts and sound studios.
