The real question I have for you is whether you'll have your own web site or not, and are you going to use the Internet as a marketing medium. But not having that, I'll do what I can to help.
If you have or will have a web site...find a decent search engine optimizer (or get a free lesson on SEO online somewhere). Optimize your site and your page for local and/or regional business.
Write articles for people in your market. Really good articles that will teach them stuff like what to look for in a designer, or 21 Top Design Tips or Planning Tips. Be sure to put a good "about" section after your article, and include a link to a specific part of your web site, which should also have great content. Submit those articles to various article directories online. Keep writing valuable content to help your target audience choose the best designer / planner / decorator.
Keep adding valuable and useful information to your site, keep writing great articles for submission, keep helping people to choose the best planner for them. I'd recommend looking at Chet Holmes material - free - at chetholmes.com, too. It would also be a good idea to have a blog at or for your site, with info that you regularly add to. (Weekly, daily...)
Having your site, writing articles, and using what you can learn from Chet should be a good start.
If you're not using a web site, then you'll have to result to making contacts through the local chamber, doing some charity work as long as your name and contact info appear with it, and basically helping people until word spreads about how great you are. You can enhance that with some local advertising board pin-ups or pay for ads (good ads) in the closest thing you can get to a targeted audience. And listen to imisidro.

The internet is a great place to start marketing a new business. The cost are relatively compared to print and t.v. I can suggest a website called www.hypedrive.com . They post reviews,links,blogs etc. They also have a Start-Up package that is geared toward new businesses. Just do your research, and choose what is in your best interest. |

My sister has a similar business and this is the way she grew her business:
1) Contact every large business, restaurant and hotel in your area and tell them about your services.
2) Attend all the wedding fairs and similar you can, either display or network like crazy.
3) Contact all the local radio stations and magazines and make friends with the editors and journalists.
4) Contact all the local clubs, sports clubs and churches and tell them about your service. |

You did not indicate what your event planning specialty is (e.g. business, trade shows, personal events)
Some ideas:
1. Hook up with big event planning companies. Some will give their overflow work to their subcontractors or they may even ask you to work with them on their projects. Good relationship with competitors can be beneficial
2. Find organizations in your area that conducts a lot of events and seminars, and offer to arrange it for them.
3. Make it a point to ask referrals from your customers -- don't just assume that they will refer you to their friends. Ask them to recommend you to anyone else they think could use your services
4. Create a website and make sure that it is listed in all local directories, on the web and off
5. Yellow page advertising - a significant portion of the population still looks at the yellow pages to find local service providers |

The big money is in children's parties. You can advertise in local family publications or even some party stores let you leave a card on their public board. You can even advertise in school yearbooks and at preschools and daycares. Really big money is going toward sweet 16 parties too.

Draw up a business plan with immediate, short term, and long term goals. Determine your market. Advertise in local market, with journals related to your business, if available. Develop a business card that will truly reflect what you are offering, and hand them out to people who come to your events. Word will spread like ripples in the sea. |
