I think a great way to advertise your site with minimal to no cost is to start a blog or a "lens". You can add links back to your site and it usually does not cost you anything. You can actually monetize your blog also and have another stream of possible income. A lot of businesses are now running their own blogs and getting good results.
You could also look into something called "Bum Marketing". I am not too familiar with it myself, but have heard that it works well.
Check out other Forums dealing with topics related to your site and place a link in your signature file to your site.
I hope that this helps you out a bit. There are some great ebooks on the subject also.

PS. If you do decide to go into PPC such as adwords etc, you must be careful. I know... I lost about $1,000 with my first campaign. Some of the Pay-Per-Click advertising can get qutie expensive if you don't know what you are doing so please be careful and do some research before jumping in.
Don't get me wrong, it is a great way to advertise your site and get immediate traffic, but know your market and which keywords to bid on. Keep your budget in check and don't get into the hype of trying to be the "Top" ad. It will end up costing you lots of money unless you are in a niche that does not have much competition. |

Yes to target advertising to your site Google Adwords is the way to go. Sign up for an account then you fill in some simple snippets to create your advertisement that is then shown on the pages of the search engines and other adsense marketing sites. You can place a budget on your advertising just be aware of what keywords you target otherwise that can become quite expensive. |

a lot of the poeple above me (or is it below me?) had some good suggestions, but one thing that really works is networking sites. although it sounds cliche, sites such as myspace, youtube, and facebook are great ways to advertise. get a username, and start getting 'friends' like crazy. put up a cool video and make sure to leave a comment on videos that your 'target group' will probably be watching, along with a short ad for your place at the end. post bulletins and 'exclusive sales' through these sites as well as a (e-)mailing list. there are a gazillion ways to advertise a new commodity, especially with the tools that are available on the internet today. good luck! |

One of the best low budget ways to advertise is through articles. If you do not have time to write them yourself, you can hire writers who will write 300 word articles for about $10 each. Submit them to www.ezinearticles.com or some other article service and you will greatly increase your traffic.
The nice thing about articles is that they sometimes stay around for years and you keep getting traffic. Also, they are really great if you do not have much money to spend.
