I have a website that I am marketing and though i've had some success with solo ads and safelists, I was wondering if anyone knew of any good free method that generate traffic that converts into sales and is not linked to traffic exchanges.

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

The first suggestion i have for you is to create a squeeze page where you capture their info.. that way if u don't convert them straight away... atleast you have their email so y ou can market to them in the future

Secondly.. the best way is SEO.. choose suggestive keywords that imply buying.. for example 'buy nokia n810' and optimize for that page

Do some article marketing and blogging. The better the information you provide, the more likely you will have people flocking to your website for more information.
