Google, for example, by default censors explicit material only. But you can change this so everything is shown, or it is even more tame so only reputable or squeaky clean sites are shown. |

Different search engines will give somewhat different results--that depends on the particular parameters used and the sophistication of the program.
Some--like Google Scholar--are designed to tape only certain kinds of information. Also, when using a search engine, you need to check for any filtering settings--most contain filters to screen out pornography, etc.
But as far as censoring--no (at least not in the US and most other open societies. In some countries--particularly China--the government does impose censoring requirements. In China, searches for information on political freedom, human rights, democracy, etc. may be blocked by government mandated censorship. |

Although the internet can be accessed from everywhere, geographical boundaries still exist, and a government can decide to censor what is shown in their country.
Most search engines have a local version, and if a country's govenment decides to censor information, it affects what can be seen in the search engine results in that country.

Im not sure about english language/western search engines but Chinese search engines are censored for political issues.... Even Taiwan is censored out in Chinese search engines! |
