thesnodgrass | Are you put off using a website if it has a .co.uk domain rather than a .com ? |
The website I am thinking of starting would possibly have a .co.uk domain rather than a .com one.
The content will be specific to a small area of the UK so would it matter if it was a .co.uk?
Are there any examples of successful .co.uk sites that have no .com equivalent? |

No, it wouldn't put me off, or indeed many people at all. .co.uk's are for UK specific websites, and a many sites have no com equivalent.
Indeed if your server is not situated in the UK (US hosting is much cheaper, with better specs and services!), then having a .co.uk is the only way to get your site into the google uk results.
A lot of the bigger websites target the whole world, so they have .com addresses. A lot of smaller sites have .co.uks though and do very well.
A lot of people in this country ignore .coms, especially when looking to buy over the net. I do this myself, as by only targetting .co.uk's you can be sure that the item is available to buy from a merchant in this country, and that the price is in pounds rather than dollars.
I always get the .co.uk first, and then think about getting the com rather than the other way round. |

No... I go more for .co.uk sites especially if I am looking for a site relevant to the UK.
If your content is specific to a certain area of the UK, I would feel more confident about a site with a uk domain name as it would indicate that the webmasters are in fact (probably!) from the UK and know what they're talking about.
That said.... you can "reserve" a .com account if you want to and you can get your hits redirected... still cheaper than a full .com account but stops the "confused" people.
As for examples.... there are plenty out there, but none that come to the top of my head... I have at times accidentally put .com and come up with a site completely different to the one I was after though... I'm at work so don't have my bookmarks to hand (sorry) |

Not at all. If your business is situated in the UK and your customer base is largely in the UK then I think it is an advantage to have a .co.uk address. It tells your customers that you are a UK company straight away. You may also wish to consider a .eu address - they are more freely available (to suit the name of your business) and cheaper too! Go to www.euro-reg.com and do a search on your required name to see what is available.

yeah more often than not in the UK its a .co.uk address u need, most if the time if its .com its the american version of the site
one example is Faith shoes www.faith.co.uk ... i website i love and shop from all the time (no .com equivalent as faith.com is some spiritual site) |

When searching for stuff, I tend to always look for uk based sites or .co.uk domains.
That way you know there's no messing about with shipping, converting, etc. |

Quite the opposite, a .co.uk domain immediately identifies the website as being relevant to me here in the UK. |

No, since you are targeting the UK it's better for it to be a .co.uk because it indicates that you're based in the UK not elsewhere. |
