tax.matters | Best Background colour for marketing Flyers/ mailshots? |
What do you think the most effective background colour with black text is?
Do you think red is best as psychologically triggers "buy" thoughts.
Or Maybe Green as its calming colour qualities.
I am marketing via flyers, black text on light background and would appreciate any ideas/thoughts on colour scheme.
Or does it even matter if it is blue, green, red etc
Any proven scientific studies known?
Any marketing statistics?
Thanks for your help Additional Details I am marketing Accountancy services to Guest Houses, B & B's, Taxi Drivers, Driving Instructors, Tradesmen such as Painters, Plumbers, Joiners etc |

I am a consumer. I may be one of the many clients who, when handed with a flyer on the side street or the mall would most often drop it in my handbag and forget about it.
there were however two occasions I remember when I stopped a while and read what the flyer was all about. One flyer's heading was "this is what you're looking for!" in red ink on light brown backgound. the other one's design and color caught my interest - back ink on egg yellow background.
the former created an instant impact coz it did catch my attention instantly because of the catchy heading. We all are always looking for something big or small, a thing, an opportunity, etc..
So I would say, right color combination and catchy headlines or titles would help get the customer attention you want.
Put yourself in the shoes of the target client. If you were the customer, what would make you read a product or service flyer the moment it is handed to you? |

>> What do you think the most effective background colour with black text is?
WHITE!
>> Do you think red is best as psychologically triggers "buy" thoughts.
There is absolutely no relationship between color and trigging buying. There IS a relationship with using color poorly and making people wonder why it's not just black text on white paper.
>> Any proven scientific studies known?
Lots...they all say it has no bearing...Color is used to create contrast, that's it.
Red doesn't mean "Warning! Don't buy!"
Green doesn't mean "peaceful"....but if you were selling medical equipment it's the right color because it IS associated with "clean". |

I've had many a customer tell me that they read somewhere that Goldenrod is best for black text. (shrug)
Really though whats more important than the coloring, is having a strong headline, and an insanely worthwhile offer.
..and your design should be highly professional looking....and with that...you generally ( not always) need to go to a full color layout)
if the thing looks like your secratary made it....it will go in the trash.
People make a split second judgment about the overall value of a mailpiece simply on how it looks. If it looks low grade, then it is assumed that whatever the message is, will be of the same cheezy value.
If you pass the visual test, their brain will delve into it further..."what is it about? ...is answered in the headline...."whats in it for me? is answered with your offer that they just can't refuse.
Advertisments that lack any real incentive to respond, and are just meant to be "awareness" ads...tend to gain very little response, no matter what else you do to it.
so...Pleasingly Professional + Headline + Offer....are the make or break issues you need to solidify.
...whatever coloring you use to support those is less of a factor.
good luck |

Depends where you are for a start.
All the American direct marketing books will tell you that the best response is an envelope with a hand written address in red ink.
In the UK red ink kills response totally because we associate it with overdue bills!
Flyers are a very difficult way to get response unless you have some way of targeting them. A blanket drop will get a 0.1% response ie one reply for every thousand dropped.
mailshots, blue ink outpulls black ink every time. As to background colour I have found that pale colours, even white pull better than strong colours.
Depends on your market and what you are promoting. I have seen good response for bright yellow A6 flyers for a disco.
End of the day all you can start with is a guess, then you test and test and test again. When you have 5 in a row that fail to beat your control then you can be happy that you have found the best.
If you give us an idea of what you are promoting we may be able to offer better tailored advice. |

Go for pastel colours like greens, yellows, pink, blue. Its subtle, easy on the eyes and friendly. Will work with whatever you're selling and black text will stand out/look funky in some visual aspects.
You could also try the opposite and have a black background with bright colours to highlight straplines etc. If all else fails in visual appeal white is most relatable colour for most people. |
