I tried meta files key words, descriptions Google web master tips yahoo tips and every thing. Still my site is the same position as it used to be. It is page 4 or # 40

I want to bring it page 1 or 1-10 rank.

Do I have to pay for the so-called search engine ranking companies or I can do it by my self. Helppppppppp

Google works on a democracy of the web through links.
That is why they call it the web, it is linked together with hyper links. In order to have a good ranking, you must have inbound links. Inbound links are links that point to your website from other websites and the link says or describes what the site is about. So if a phrase like "used boats" was hyperlinked to your website from another site, then people and google would know that your site is about "used boats".

The point is that in order to get a good ranking, you need links pointing to your site with the correct keywords, also known as the anchor text, describing your site. And more importantly, it's best to have the link from a similar themed site.

Yes, you need good content and have title tags but the whole meta tag thing will NOT get you ranked.

Google counts links that are pointing to your site like a vote. So the more links you have, the more "popular" your site is with the search engines.

Try this... go to google and type in the search box, link:www.yoursite.com or your competitors site and look at where they are getting inbound links. Also, try this in Yahoo.

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 60 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic terms, the goods and services, followed by a location from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state. The placement of a domain name which is not generic within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually up to 41 words to form a complete paragraph which
best describes one's goods and services. It is not merely a list.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on
Google.com: Begin with the very "generic" search query
"sandwiches downtown los angeles," taking note to not
abbreviate Los Angeles to "LA" and of course, leave
out the parentheses ("). It will bring up some 2.4
million+ search results. Check out where "Nazos.net"
is ranked. It's on the FIRST FRONT PAGE [ranked #5]!
Again, Nazos.net's high web presence was achieved by
proper web design and placement of relevant metatags
according to Google's publication guidelines.

The best way in my opinion, is to let these guys do it for you, if you don't know how, or have the time to optimize your site.

I have not paid for any advertising or seo work... so yes you can. This took just 4 months - new page to number 1.

It all depends on what your key words are - the number of key words and the density of them (how many times they are repeated).
Next comes links from pages that have a high google PR (4+) the more you get that are RELEVANT the better.
