Can a potential employer ask a previous employer why you left their company, and can they get the real answer?
Additional Details I know that they can ask, but can they tell them why a person got terminated...
A past employer cannot legally badmouth or say anything to prevent a potential employer from hiring you, however the past employer can say what dates you were employed and whether or not they would hire you again and the potential employer should base their decision on that statement.

They DO ask but strictly speaking ALL the previous employer can prove are the dates of your employment. Period. For almost employment situations that's the law, but its a law that companies break every day.
Exceptions include positions where you might have a security clearance or are a corporate officer.

It depends. Your potential employer can call your previous employer and ask them to confirm the information that you gave them on your application/resume. If it is incorrect, your previous employer can only tell them that it is incorrect but they can not tell them the real reason. If you sign a paper allowing your potential employer to get a reference from your previous employer your previous employer CAN tell them the real reason that you left the company.

Yes, but if you left on good terms with the company and your boss, you probably won't get a bad reference. Most employers are fairly professional when it comes to this.

Sure they can ask, and it's up to the previous employer whether they answer or not.

Yea, they can ask... Because its part of the intervewing process.

Yes,that is how the hiring is done most places.Would you hire someone without checking them out? It's just business to do so.
