watford_boy21 | Can adverstising only sell a poor product once? |
Although there may be no definitive answer to this question, it would be interesting to get some ideas on what people think! |
|

No, it can sell a poor product more than once if the product has cahcet/cool (although some would argue that this would therefore mean that it is NOT 'a poor product').
Also, a product can be poor but still the best thing in its market, there might be nothing better, in which case it will still sell, but possibly not due purely to the marketing.
As a general rule of thumb tho, i think its very rare for people to buy something repeatedly that doesnt actually do the job that they bought it for - in fact, i cant think of many examples (other than, perhaps, insurance or pensions, whereby one might not know that it didnt do what it was meant to do until it was too late). |

Marketing doesn't always sell the product. It is suppose to attract people to the product and make them aware that it exists and informs consumers about the price and where you can buy the product. The fact is a good business person knows that you need to sell a product more then once if you can. Word of poor products travels fast and it is the business persons reputation on the line. Remember you are only as good as your last cup of coffee!!! |

In order for a poor product to only sell once and then drop off the face of the earth would require the consumer group to have some sort of mind-link communication. This is not the case. Therefore you can market as much as you want and sell as many poor products as many times as you want to as many people as are around to buy your poor product.
You are familiar with the cliché: "A sucker is born every minute"?
Yea. That's about how it works. |

This is a popular misconception that advertising is required to sell a product. Advertising is merely an informative marketing tool which is directed towards prospective target segment. There are lot of other things which lead to initial purchase and then the repeat purchase of a product. These things range fm the availablility to the target market, to the packing, to the price, etc.
The performance of the product is just one of these things. |

How many times have you bought the knock-off brand Ziplock bags? They don't' hold anything, yet every once and a while, I am dumb enough to buy them. Marketing or selling doesn't really always matter. Ziplock has the best name in closing baggies, yet people go the other way sometimes. |

There is no limit to the number of times any product an be sold. The sales depend upon the marketing.
2nd time round 'NEW X' beats the rest,
3rd time round 'Special New X' for the results you crave.
4th time round ' Wonder X' the product you've been waiting for
etc
etc. |

Skoda, Sunny Delight, Disanni, Sainsburys, M&S, 02, 3, New Formula Coke, Malt Whiskey, Guiness etc etc
If a brand or proposition bombs or is dieing you learn from it - change the proposition if necessary (all areas of the mix including brand name) and then tweak the message... Give it a second shot before you drown all the investment you made in getting the product to market in the first place.
Not sure that consumers will take up a brand if it is pushed again - without major changes to either the product, the price, the name or route to market (i.e. moving all the advertising into sampling or sponsorship). |

Is Coca Cola the most delicious drink in the world?
- probably not
Is it the best selling?
- yes
Why?
- advertising makes you think it is a better product than it is. It is not a bad tasting drink. Some people really do enjoy it. Most drink it because it is cool to do so and it is widely available. Without advertsing coca cola would not be very popular at all. |
