I would pick something you like or buy- you will be more motivated and become a better consumer. For instance, do you like make-up or beauty products? If so, how about researching how Sephora markets so successfully. If you like music, why not research how music gets into stores- look at Handleman, as they deliver all the top picks to selling giants like Wal-Mart. Look at Proctor and Gamble- do you know how many new product launches they do a year and how many fail? (More than you might probably guess).
Look at the statistics for small businesses and the marketing challenges they have due to limited funds. Ever heard of the book "Guerrilla Marketing"- read and review that book- tons of ideas for small businesses and effective ways of getting the word out.
Consider the show "The Apprentice"- research how many companies want product placement on that show and how much it costs.
