Can anyone tell me how overstock.com and ebay make money?

I'm just curious. Is it from advertising or do they charge a fee? I don't use these sites so i have no knowledge.

eBay is almost the perfect online business model they make money at every level from listing through to the payment (they own paypal) and also from allowing advertising on the site (but this is just pocket money). The real beauty is that they bear almost 0% of the risk in the whole process simply acting as a conduit for other peoples money taking a small cut at various levels.

Overstock hint is in the name. They buy 'old' stock at vastly reduced rates and then sell on with a mark up.

There's not a membership fee, per say, but Ebay charges a fee to list an item to sell, a fee for every extra you choose when you list it, then another fee when you actually sell the item. Plus, if you decide to print a shipping label, they charge you another fee. They got quite a racket over there.

Overstock.com has a deal with many companies to buy their close-outs at a very low price.
Many companies contact them and make a deal before money is exchanged.
In other words, I got the name, you got the stuff, lets make a deal.

Ebay charges a membership fee, and Overstock just buys there items at wholesale and sell for cheap ( like Wal-Mart and other chains)

from what i heard ebay charges the seller a percent of what is sold
