For the kind of business you're starting, you can (and I know this is heresy) put off the logo for a bit. Heck, I do graphic design and went without a logo for the first two years of being in business.
You can get free, decent looking business cards from several places. At this stage of your business, you need to get clients and validate your business plan. Branding, creating a visual identity, all that good stuff - they're important, but not as important as getting some cash in the door.
For example, if you're doing laundry for people, what else can you do while you're there? Most obviously, how about working out a deal with a dry cleaner so you can get that done for your customers too?
Alternatively, you can position yourself as a "valet" service (it would be no more work than positioning yourself as a mobile laundry.) Then, with one client, instead of just doing the wash, you can walk the dog, return the rented movies to the video store, etc. Point is that you'd end up with way higher upside revenue per client than with your current idea, for approx. the same selling effort.
Big companies focus on brand development. Start-ups need to focus on revenue generation.
Get some freebie cards and then go sell something. If you're still in business 12 months from now, there are services on the web that will generate you a logo for $100.
Remember to have fun, too. :)

I highly recommend the site www.worth1000.com. Basically you set the amount you're willing to pay (Typically from $50 all the way up to $200). Then they hold a contest for all graphic designers to design a logo (lasts a week). Then, you have final say on which design you really like! You can view finished contests by going to the site, clicking on "contests", then clicking on "corporate". That should give you a pretty good idea as to what it's all about... Good Luck! |
