It is possible considering they have so many people and labor can be hired at a low price. How India could handle the inflation would be one of the keys to becoming a superpower.
They need to raise their GNP.

Too many internal squabbles. Too much petty, interpersonal, interstate and intercaste politics to be resolved. They haven't resolved internal issues in the last few thousand years. Its not possible for them to change in the next few decades. And too may internal divisions that have resulted in a thousand different peoples within a country. And since Sep 11th, religious issues. The bombings in India on July 11th prove it.

Add to that, too few organisational skills. There is good talent there, to be sure, but disorganised talent is worse than no talent. Indians would be enormously successful individually or in small pockets, like the West Indian moteliers in the United States or the tech-job-outsourcing software engineers of South India. But as a nation, its not likely.

The one advantage they have as a market is the size of the population which creates a more valuable market for everything than anywhere else. A cellphone costs anything between $100 and $400 in India. A car costs anything between $10000 and $30000. Thats pretty much the same as anywhere in the world. But the number of cellphone consumers are in millions, and the car buyers too are in hundreds of thousands. Thats where they win. Numbers.

Secondly, they win on jobs because while the prices are international, their salaries are local. A good Indian salary would still be $12000 a year. And the average would be about $4000. This difference between income and prices is not sustainable. Very soon, price equalisation is giving rise to income equalisation. With that, the competitive advantage gets eroded and the decline begins.

This crazy growth in India's population is precariously placed. Income sources do not increase proportionately. When the global outsourcing stops, there's a problem.

India will overtake the US but given all the very REAL factors outlined by Rafael I do not see it overtaking China. For the simple fact that the dictatorial regime in charge in China will take hard decisions that other Democratic nations cannot even contemplate and that will help them to be the dominant power in world politics in times to come. They are already the ONLY nation that regularly ignores the US and merrily goes about doing it's own thing! ;-)

Definately need to raise GNP, lose the caste system thing, do some major population control, you know little things, but I don't see it happening cause they just don't have the money to be a superpower, that's why we send jobs there cause we can pay them a whole lot less.

India has pint size leadership with mega size ego in political arena and cost of fighting an election makes sure that all politicians has to be corrupt to survive this leads to a nexus between politicians, bureaucrats, mafias and big business add to that vote bank politics and u have combination that can not deliver for another hundred years.
