Since poor diet causes just as much health problems as smoking does, should we also ban all high fat foods? Why don't we cut road deaths by fitting all cars with a speed limiter to 55mph? Why don't we ban dangerous and extreme sports, after all, they kill off quite a few people? Since violent imagery might set off one or two weirdos, let's ban all films that didn't get a U certificate, and any game with a rating that isn't 3+.
There, now, that's much safer for everyone, isn't it? |

havanadig is right, they'll get less tax and so won't be able to pay themselves so much, I know it won't matter much because it's not like they'll be living in poverty over it, but they'll think it's the end of the world. |

beacuse more one simple reason governments get way too much revenue from the taxes the put on smokes and if they banned them they would loss billions of dollars and there populations would rise greatly in the few years after that causing more of a financial hardship with the ageing populas. |

If they can pass out free birth control to prevent pregnancy, and synthetic drugs to break heroin addiction....why can't they help those break free of the hardest addiction, created by the cigarette manufacturers, I might add? Trust me...I have broken the habit of numerous drugs over the years....but nicotine is the hardest yet, not to mention the cost of the non-effective patch makes it not worth it. |

Remember prohibition? It didn't work...people still drank even though it was illegal and it caused a lot of criminal activity. If cigarettes were illegal, people would still smoke and ordinary people would turn into criminals. Plus, since so many people are addicted to cigarettes, without cigarettes, they would not be able to function in their jobs and the resulting decline in productivity would hurt the economy. |

I really am for less government...fewer laws...more liberty...and more freedom of choice. I used to smoke.. I was inconsiderate of others. I am not pro smoking. But I am against the encroachment of government on our personal liberties. What is next? Fast food? Salt? Caffeine? |

Because western countries are generally still FREE COUNTRIES where people can make their own health decisions, rather than have the government run their lives.
Singapore is a dictatorship. Is that what you want? |
