Could a soft drink actually be named "Pop"?
Or would that violate the rules of trademark that say brand names cannot be everyday words?

For branding and naming purposes, you wouldn't want to call your drink "Pop".

Xerox is a great example of this. It is just bad for business expansion.

Alchemist
What about Pop Tarts? The only problem I would see is getting the trademark registered. You might also have to deal with the makers of Pop Tarts as well. I'm not sure if proprietary rules apply to everyday words, but you could try it.

Drinks should also be called "Mom" to keep within the laws on gender discrimination.

Yahoo, Amazon, and Apple are, and were everyday words.
Where did you get the idea they couldn't be trademarked?
Anyone can take a common word or phrase and use it as a product or service.
Then you "brand" it as a logotype and go to the US Patent Office and apply for a tradename/mark. FYI: it can take up to 18 months for that to happen.
In the meantime, create the product and register it in your own home state first, with the Secretary of State.

used to be a soda named "Pop Cola"
in the late 60's I drank it cuz it was 16oz while Coke was 12 oz,, cost a dime,, was 98% as good as Coke,

I would not think so. Pop is a slang word for soda. When I moved to Florida from NY, i worked with native Floridians, I asked one of the guys to get me a pop out of the machine and he looked at me like I was from mars. It is called soda down here.

I never heard of that rule.
I think it is a great idea. My marketing teacher may say different, but I would drink "POP"
