You really need to define what you mean by advertising.
Billboard
in public transportation
radio
television
newspapers
magazines
flyers
junk mailers
I am sure that I did not list them all, but hope you get the right idea.

The primary function of advertising is to communicate a marketing objective to a selected target audience. This is done by creating a relevant message (usually incorporating the who, what, where, when, why, and how) and circulating it to a target market.
Good advertising has 3 criteria:
1 - message MUST be interesting
2 - It MUST be directed to the purchasing audience market
3 - Must utilize a medium (method of conveyance - tv, radio, etc...) suitable for that product.
The problem with most advertising is that, while its interesting, the message gets lost. For example, someone above mentioned the 'Riverdancing Chimps'. While it's entertaining, do you know what the product they are selling?

So the most important thing to remember is to have a good message and not to lose that message in the fluff.
Additionally, the most EFFECTIVE marketing (advertising) is Word of Mouth. When people tell their friends about you, you've made it. |

There is the tv ad with the Riverdancing chimpanzees. It is quite cute. I never can remember what fast food emporium is doing the advertising! Somehow I see that as a failed campaign. Good advertising strongly sets the product in the viewer's/reader's mind. |

The most effective advertising is online advertising. Another form is advertising with promotional products such as pens, keytags, magnets, etc. You can give them out to get your business recognized and remembered.
