I'm a college student and am wondering what to major in between marketing and advertising. I really like journalism so thats why i'm interested in advertising and i like people and sales so thats why i'm interested in marketing. What do you guys reccommend and how are they different because i've heard that are pretty much the same. |

At the top level, there is only one designation i.e. Chief Marketing Officer or CMO, who is responsible for both, sales & marketing.
Marketing involves
1. Market Research
2. Market Analysis
3. Management Information Reports (MIS)
4. Media & Communications (Internal – for company and External – for Clients/ Partners)
Sales
1. Corporate Sales
2. Institutional Sales
3. Retail Sales
4. Wholesale Sales
Marketing as career involves more of desk job and creativity and moreover, communicating through non verbal channels, whereas sales involves regular one-to-one interactions with clients/ prospects.
But it is not completely ruled out that marketing people do not go for one to one interactions. Lot of times, marketing people have to also manage events and promotions. I would suggest you to choose marketing. As you have interest in journalism your research skill would help you in understanding and designing marketing strategies, as well as you would get sufficient opportunities for meeting people. Eventually you can also get into events and promotions.

I will not explain the difference between marketing and advertising by elaborating the concepts or theory...etc.
Let me explain this in some modern way.... i know everyone will like it :
In a party, a very rich single boy went with his friend.
he saw a very beautiful girl in that party....
he directly went to that girl and said her "I am very rich, marry me".
This situation is nothing but "marketing" or "direct marketing"
While in the same party, the friend of that boy went to to that beautiful girl and said her "My friend is very rich, marry him".
This situation is "Advertising"....

advertising is a subset of marketing... advertising is just about promotion to increase awareness, brand value, reach, etc.. etc...
traffic etc..It is about communication basically...what you communicate...and how you communicate and how much you differentiate your business to others.
Marketing is more than just advertising... it is also about managing existing people/clients customers...
It is also communication & includes defining process to increase effectiveness of exiting systems and re engineer to make it more effective...

Though the topics are different, both has to go hand in hand. With out advertising, marketing of product is difficult, and for advertising there should be a product to market. Even in journalism they teach you, methods of advertising. Since advertisements are only major source of income, in print media. |
