Go to www.copyright.gov and you can find out all you need to know.
I would say though if this work was created 'on the job' and 'for the job' you may not have that right. However, did you sign some kind of agreemnt with them about your work when you were hired or at a later time? If not maybe not.
I would get permission from them to use it with the notation - orig custom art work - all rights owned by whoever company.
When someone pays you for specific work that work is theirs.

If your employer owns the copyright then they do have the right to restrict its use.
not telling you!!!
Did you sign a contract? They probably wouldn't mind but if there is no copyright on it then anyone can copy it....it could be you or your employer that own the copy right....if they own it you probably are not allowed to use it weather you created it or not....maybe they will let you any way out of the goodness of their hearts....ask your employer

If the artwork is for a client of theirs then he does have the right to keep you from having it in yours because essentially it is his and he can display it in his portfolio under his business name. Because he employs you he owns what you make on his clock in his office.

It would be better to have the copyright. If you don't then there can be conflict. In general it is better to have your work copyrighted before you put anything on the internet to prevent someone from stealing your work. If your employer owns the copyright than they have the right to restrict its use.
