Informer | Do I need Photoshop skills to be a copywriter? |
I have absolutely no skills in an apple computer, i have always used a PC/Microsoft. I want to be a copywriter and so far my ads are done from copy and pasting images onto microsoft word to get my concept across. How can I made my portfolio look great without getting an apple computer and without upgrading my laptop, which barely has any memory left. Help please! |

It sounds like you're trying to get a job as a copywriter. Obviously, your portfolio will look much more professional if you use software such as Photoshop or InDesign. However, these products come with steep price tags and learning curves.
On the other hand, once you have a terrific looking portfolio, the problem solves itself. You won't need those tools, as the ads (brochures/ newsletters/ flyers/ web sites) will have been done by a professional graphic designer.
Consider hiring yourself at a fairly low rate to a designer with a portfolio you really like. After partnering on some projects, you'll have a portfolio you can take anywhere.
Once you're working as a copywriter, you can communicate your concept to the designer/design team using words alone (e.g., "Photo of screaming teen in messy room"), and then write your headline and body copy.
Save your paychecks, and then when you're ready, buy a Mac. You'll be glad you did.
Have fun,

A copywriter is a wordsmith and typically it is his /her job to write the copy/ text that complements the visuals, typically done by the art director and graphic design team. As a copywriter you need to be good with words/ phrases but it does help to know the tools of the trade and having graphic/ web design skills is a definite plus however not essential. Every ad that gets made is a team effort with multiple inputs. Goodluck. ;-) |

What I hear is that if your ideas/concepts are totally amazing, then it doesn't matter how they look. But you'll competing against people whose work has been highly designed, so of course it puts you at a disadvantage. It's good to have some basic Photoshop skills, but Photoshop isn't a miracle -- bad art direction looks bad no matter what program you use. Really you should team up with a designer or an aspiring art director -- you both benefit from each other's skills, and it shows potential employers that you can successfully work with a partner. |

The art director usually needs to have more of the Photoshop skills, but if you want to make yourself the most marketable and valuable, I would strongly suggest you learn how to use a Mac and Photoshop. Both are basic skills in advertising that if you don't speak their language, you'll be left behind.

Im not really sure what a copywriter does but it sounds like you design flyers, brochures and such. MS Word has some limited publishing tools, so it can only go so far.
Yes, i suggest you get some version of photoshop. You dont have to buy a mac, I have it on MS. Also youl get used to its more complicated features in little time (understanding the concept of 'layers' and such'). Its also got some pretty cool tools for photo editing and other things.
So ya, empty some space on your laptop and try get hold of some photoshop software. |
