Do TV commercials work?
Are you more likely to buy a product because you liked the commerical?

Of course they work or companies wouldn't invest billions
of dollars of advertising revenue with the networks.

However, as with all advertising, they work to the degree
that they are targetted.

For instance, if you are watching a show that is more
appealing to men than women, you'll probably see more
products advertised for men, etc.

They don't need everybody who sees the add to purchase
the product. They are only looking for the ad to encourage
a fraction of the people who wouldn't have bought to bought.
0.1% return is pretty good if you hit enough people with the
ad.

Even simple brand recognition justfies advertising revenue.
If you see the same ad over and over (say, the Geiko
lizard), you remember Geiko. Sure, they'd like you to
not only recognize the name but have some idea what
the product does, but even simple recognition can
increase sales.

Yes they do. Super bowl proves it, look what they pay. The best commercials and most paid for are during the most viewed television time. Prime time and prime sports. All the free questionnaires you fill out for free stuff helps them to determine what people buy as well. Have a good one:-)

Yes they do work, because they have been around for ages.

Me personally, I doubt it, mainly because I would tend to use the product and not the commerical.

Commerical tend to go to LCD method and that is why most of the appeal to the base instinct, sex, pie in the face humor, cutey images, greed, etc.

If they had to show honest adverts, this would cause problems because the products themselves are mostly fake.

ie, Shampoo for dyed hair. ... Stuff to remove unnatural covering on your hair. Does not compute.

depends on the product. But yes, sometimes I am more likely to try something I see advertised otherwise it would not catch my attention on the shelf. I'm not going to go by a new pair of running shoes becauese i like the guy in the commercial.

Blossom_Kitty
Depends on the product and whether or not the commercial was memorable. Sometimes I'll be out shopping and come across a product I might be interested in and remember the ad...

probably depends on what it is. Say I am watching tv and a wendy's comercial came on for a frosty I might go get one but if I was watching for a new plasma TV I won't go get one.

I personally try to avoid being fooled by what adverts tell me, but thwey definately work. I have a friend who watches TV alot and he firmly believes everything the adverts tell him, he will stick to what the adverts say even when the adverts are factually proven wrong.

Eg:

My firm resolution is that widescreen Tvs are a total gimmik. People only believe that they better because they are told so by the adverts, the advertising companies main argument is that widescreen TVs are 'wider', has anyone ever questioned this? - well, I did, and here's the maths!:

Using the example of a typical 28" tv, measured diagonally from corner to corner, I calculated the actual surface area of glass that you buy with the TV.

(28") 16:9 ratio= 376.32 square inches.
(28") 4:3 ratio = 387.96 square inches.

This proves my point, if you buy a 28" widescreen tv, you are actually buying a tv with 11.64 square inches less viewing area than the equevelant 4:3 ratio tv with the same daigonal width- and you'd probably pay more for it! - and if you brought a larger tv, you would have even more wastage.

Widescreens were simply a marketing gimmik brought about in order to revamp an old product, in order to stop the prices going down. 16:9 doesn't mean that the tv is wider, 16:9 is just a ratio - it means nothing what so ever! In fact, a 1:1 ratio would be the most efficient size ratio to have as this would give you the most viewing area.......................... Well, my case rests.

Yes they work, especially if they're funny or cute. I will try something b/c I've seen the commerical or maybe I've heard the jingle.

Yes... It reminds me of who's out there when I want something. When I wanted new auto insurance the first company that crossed my mind was Geico, because of all their funny commercials. I called them up and they've been my insurance for 7 years.

Jen S
maybe, it depends on the price

jhing p
I guess if it's convincing and how they sell or market their product. It depends upon the factors that they presented and if it's really a necessity to one's life.

shray_malik
if tv commercials did not work then u would not have asked question on this.

u see they do work.as they worked on u that is why u asked question relating to them.

NO!!!! The commercial has nothing to do with the product. nobody is going to say their product sucks in a commercial even if it does. I would check consumer reports or google it before I bought anything pricey. Unfortuanlely many people are gullible. I believe in the saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probabl;y is."

depends on a product. i am more likely to remember the brandname if i liked the commercial

ceprn
I'm not. As a matter of fact, I am less likely to buy something that I have seen advertised than I am something that wasn't. I'm not an easily brainwashed sheep.

Liking the commercial has nothing, or little, to do with awareness of the product. If it weren't for commercials we wouldn't know about half the things out there.
