I recently started a marketing consulting business in Houston, TX. However, I am not here to toot my own horn. A local college might be a great place to start when looking for good ideas, strategies, fresh minds, or just some extra support. The best way to go about doing that would be by finding out which department advertising and/or marketing majors fall under (usually business or communication departments). Secondly, contact the dean or chairman of that department and tell them your issue and ask for contact information for specific professors. This is a great time of year to offer up a project for your local university, before the semester starts. You could also submit a request for an intern from the marketing department to help you with marketing tasks.

That's a really open ended question. Are you looking for someone to help you build a brand and establish a value proposition or someone to help you drive sales and lead generation? It's a very different skill set.
Marketing is intimidating but there are great resources throughout the web to lean on because you'll likely have to begin doing the initial work on your own. If you have a website and you're looking to drive traffic, basic Google AdSense and Yahoo Keyword programs are fairly intuitive once you get into it. You can set daily budgets and max Cost Per Clicks to limit risk.

Sites like iVillage & Yahoo offer free classes in their small business channels for people like yourself. The iVillage ones are especially helpful and there's lessons in there about search engine optimization and basic digital marketing. Use these resources to network as much as you can. Good luck.
