Well in the eyes of their clients they do. But in reallity they don't. At most they can generate some interest but if the product is not useful people will figure that out and quit buying them regardsless of marketeers. |

No, they don't it may seem that way, but they are merely following our lead.
They are very good at it. Many create "word of mouth" campaigns that recruit your co-workers, friends even family members to tell you about certain products.
When we're being "sold" something, we have our guards up. We're thinking fo reasons not to buy it. The humor of television ads gets us to bring our guards down. If it's a good comercial, we'll talk about it, creating "buzz." Marketers love buzz, any buzz.
Many times we want to emulate someone, whether they are on TV or in our lives. Marketers can find these people and will ask them for input on products. The early-adopting trendsetter gets the product because they like it, and we buy it because they like it.
Do you want to dress like your boss? Own the same car his boss drives? Send your kids to the same schools?
This is where the line between wants and needs gets blurred
This morning I spent $11 for breakfast for my fiance and me at McDonalds. They got my order wrong and they didn't even have gamepieces on the extra hash browns I ordered just so I coupld play in their Monopoly Promotion. They charged me extra for orange juice without telling me. I felt realIly stupid because I had been convinced to over pay for food I didn't like because I wanted a "free" ringtone for my cell phone because none of the standard tones are acceptable to me. I called their "customer care" line and was told that the "promotion is ending" so the owner may not have purchased enough to last. There's three weeks left! They wouldn't give me game pieces for the three extra hash browns I ordered and are sending me vouchers for two breakfast items so I can eat more of their disgusting product . Next time, I'll just buy the ringtone and get some eggs, pork roll and english muffin on my way home from work on friday.
Do you see what's wrong with the above scenario? I went to McDs for reasons CREATED BY MARKETERS and now I feel utterly taken advantage of. |
