Do the free search engines really work or do I have to pay for advertising on yahoo or google?

If your page is familiar and good (I mean relevant to something very much) then it could come forward automatically. However this may happen very slowly.
If you want to be on the side on google where the adverts are then you have to pay for that.

Search engines look for lots of quality content, lots of pages with relevant and interesting content - information that visitors find interesting and helpful.

Visitors are not looking for your Web site. They seek information via keywords entered in a search engine like Google.

In fact, I think it is the other way around. The free organic search engine advertising works better in the long run even though it may take longer to get consistent results.

If you advertised on google adwords or Yahoo pay for click, fraud can also be a problem.

However, if your site is effective, well built and well-optimised it should continue to do well on the search engines- providing you keep developing content and links- once it is up there, without the need to continually fork out money.

Build inbound links to your website.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:
