Do you think advertising too expensive, and if so,is it worth the expense?

Brett
i think advertisements, most of the time, only raise our awareness that such a product exists, but doesn't attract us to buy the product advertised, so i think that advertising is rather useless as a consumer.

Denise M
"Too expensive" is a relative term. Too expensive compared to what?

The purpose of adveritising is to bring customers to a business. Advertising is not as much for consumers - yes, it can inform consumers of new products, services, sales - etc. But it's of greatest benefit to business owners.

Personally, I call advertising "the black hole" because yes, I agree it is too expensive. But for large companies - believe me - they wouldn't keep paying thousands and possibly millions of dollars for advertising if it didn't work for them. The thing is if you're starting a business on a shoestring budget - can you afford to advertising enough to create critical mass and grow a business to the next level? Probably not. At least not without maxing out credit cards or taking a business loan.

And then - unless you REALLY know what you're doing it's entirely possible that you can spend a bunch of money on an ad and get absolutely to response at all. Scary thought. That's what happens when people don't seek knowledge about how marketing works and how to create an emotionally compelling message that makes people want to say yes.

The orderly process of a sale - this is taught in every Marketing 101 class - is A.I.D.A. That's attention, interest, desire and action. That means that before a person buys something they go through those four steps. The reason advertising can be such a failure is that it only brings people through the attention and maybe the interest phase - but it doesn't bring them all the way through the last two steps - desire and action. It's not even intended to most of the time.

So that's for starters: What else can you do instead of advertising?

Public relations

Promotions

Search engine optimization

Article Marketing

Affiliate Marketing

Referral Marketing

Blogging

.... this is just a start. I wouldn't say all of these are free. If you don't know how to optimize your website - you'll need to pay to do it.

Setting up a blog can be very inexpensive or free - but it takes time to make blog entries every few days. One of the things I tell my marketing mentoring clients is that if you're going to be getting business online - it helps to enjoy writing and at least know how to put a decent sentence together. You don't have to be a Hemingway or JK Rowling - you can learn marketing writing. But it helps to have basic writing skills.

Don't think that just because you don't have a bunch of money to throw down "the black hole" of advertising that you can't have a successful business. However if you don't learn emotionally compelling marketing and how to create that critical message that makes people want to happily say, "I gotta have it" - or unless you can afford to hire it out to an expert - I guarantee you won't have a successful business.

Hope this is helpful to you.

All the best,

The big issue is that for most businesses 95%+ of the their advertising/ marketing budget is spent on getting the phone to ring.

The actualy PROBLEM is that these businesses businesses give ABSOLUTELY NO THOUGHT as to what happens when the phone actually does ring with a prospect.!

I really believe that Messages On Hold services from companies like http://www.theonholdcompany.com.au ensure you no longer miss out on an 1000's of incredible opportunities to
- Captivate Callers,

I think many types of advertizing are over priced and over rated.

Direct mail is coming back, and with the power full data and selects available many professional companys and consultants can help you point your direct mail efforts to your target market.

www.professional-lists.com is one of those comapnies. They are able to define a consumer by thier history of purchasing from mail order, credit score, annual income, and home value, an MUCH more.

When you direct your efforts into a company who can provide data such as this you get ROI.

If you advertise and make a dollar, and the item sold cost $.50, it was worth advertising if it brought someone to you that would otherwise not have been a customer.

Depends on what kind of payback you get. There are many different types of advertising that may payback better than others, TV, internet, print, etc. You may have to pay a lot to reach a lot but if you get back then it was worth it.
