Do you think customers are the victims of advertising and if so why?
just wondering

It is Advertising that makes them compare the value of two like products. It is source of Information, as a matter of fact.

No doubt you convince people on buying your products, but actually, you provide data to a vigilant buyer who is keen on getting the best value for his/her money, or a purchase department and the likewise.

Did "advertising" hold a loaded pistol to the customer's head and force them to buy the product, or reach into their pocket and take the money out of their wallet?

Didn't think so.

Consumers may often be stupid, but that doesn't make them *victims* of anything except their own gullibility and bad choices.

In general, people are sheep and follow the flock. The majority of people are a bit stupid and cannot handle the freedom of their own free will and own opinions. They are also insecure and think that by having the things that the adverts tell them will make them cool, attractive and a success, that this is all there is to life. This is why the world is full of so many tossers, and this is why there is so much advertising everywhere - because unfortunately, advertising works, and advertisers know just how much they can manipulate the public.

Someone further down has asked: 'Did "advertising" hold a loaded pistol to the customer's head and force them to buy the product, or reach into their pocket and take the money out of their wallet?' - well, psychologically, to those who are easily led, it did yes.

In the UK, we have the BBC which has no TV adverts on any of it's channels, so I just always watch this. Any other programmes I want to watch, I buy on DVD so I don't have any adverts on them. I don't buy papers or magazines, or anything that may have an advert in it.

Adverts irritate me, and I find their whole concept repulsive.

Advertising is a form of persuasion.

yes because they are the ones that are proned to buying the product, this makes them the victim

Adverts are entertaining these days better that tv shows .
People become victims if they choose to not because of tv ads.

Good question.

Advertising depends on connecting with the consumer emotionally to entice them to make a specific choice.
Emotion of lust: Reaching out to teenage boys to sell cologne by showing them pictures of scantily-clad women falling all over sweetly-scented teen hunks.
Emotion of envy: Reaching out to young professionals to make them feel like they deserve a new car with all the features that will make them alluring and beautiful.
Emotion of guilt: Reaching out to men who have families to ask them what happens when they're out of town and someone breaks in their home (security system), or what happens if they die and there is no one to take car of their loved ones (life insurance).

Sometimes these emotions are touched, and we respond with the appropriate action. Subway makes us feel guilty about eating fatty fast foods so we have a 6" turkey sub instead.

Other times, these emotions are manipulated unduly. Late night advertisements lead men to believe that there are attractive, available ladies waiting to talk with them on a party line for $4.95 a minute, when in reality, the women on the other line could be unattractive and totally uninterested in them.

I believe that some customers are gullible, but they hold the key to their own actions. Informed consumers choose wisely: it is not the fault of the advertisers if the services or products they promote make consumers feel they are lead astray. We, as consumers, must be more diligent than that.

I think both customers and the person who advertises can be victims.
First the customers normally fall victim to fraud and persons who advertises their product which might be genuine may not get a sale or barely sell any thing because customers who had bad experiences by sending their money first are afraid to take chances and the person who advertises may loose a lot of money. Honest sellers who advertises their products are not taking chances by crediting because customers can also be dishonest and the sellers become victims.

no its a whole lifestyle, a whole mindset of a generation - the advertising is just manipulating that

Because we are stupid enough to believe what we see, and hear.

My favourite slogan is two for the price of one. If you dont need it, why buy it, that saves real money.
