Bite Me | Do you think some people on eBay set up fake accounts and bid on their own auctions to drive the price up? |
While I try to avoid eBay because of their unfair policies, the predatory practices of their "Paypal" banking subsidiary, and their anti-firearms bias, sometimes there's just no alternative.
I've noticed that sometimes the auction bids will fluctuate like someone is TRYING to get a low price to get a bit higher. It seems like, most of the time, these fluctuations happen when the seller has a "store," rather than when they are just someone selling individual items.
Do you think this is likely? Are sellers bidding through other accounts to drive their prices up? |

I've heard about that before and I would imagine there are people who do. They can always avoid the fees by entering an agreement to void the transaction and no one has to pay. My brother was bidding an auction where he swears the sellers did this to him. |

That would be stupid. If they win their own auction, they have to pay the fees for the sale, but they receive no money.
If they want a higher minimum, then they just set a higher minimum amount (or set a reserve price).
We've sold thousands of things on eBay, and it never makes mathematical sense to bid on your own items. What you're seeing is just the fact that there are so many buyers on eBay. That's why it works. |

I agree with you that's why I haven't used my Ebay account in almost 2 years now! Oh! and to warn you and all the others out there Their is a fake Paypal page so I stopped using that as well! I kept recieveing emails to update my credit card info and something seemed fishy about that because I had just updated my info on the real paypal it is almost impossible to tell the real page from the fake because they look so much alike so people please keep track of everything you do online!!! |

This is a good observation on your part. The practice is called shell bidding, and eBay prohibits it. But eBay can only catch the shell bidders who are bad enough at it that they leave a clear pattern of behavior. Being caught can result in expulsion from the eBay community, so the consequences are severe. If you see a pattern of this potential fraud, you can report it to eBay using their safe harbor (search for shell bidding on eBay help and they give you a lot of information on it). |

I'm fairly certain this happens a lot. The paypal system is predatory beyond belief.
Buyer and seller beware. |

Some might but they risk paying fees to sell to themselves. |
