Typically if you're using it to brand or create recognition in mass amounts of people, you would want it to be short and recognizable.
You can write a mission statement that can be a few phrases and boil that down into your logo and slogan.

First it has to be ORIGINAL and available. Since you say it is "personal" It can pretty much be an epic (if you so want it) as it is unlikely to be accessed by total strangers who have no clue about you.
On the other hand if you want the brand identity to have a life of its own then typically the logo/ slogan should be catchy or memorable and you will need to carry out marketing support and reinforcement activities that help to establish the identity.

If you are talking about a logotype - A logo of letters, then no it doesn't. Look at Pepsi-Cola or Coca-Cola not short at all. Hewlitt-Packard is another good one. My brother works for Price-Waterhouse-Coopers a huge, successful company. It will all depend on how you brand the logo/look.
