Pay attention to SARA and watch that brilliant, heartbreaking, funny and all-too-true YouTube video. I've been there. In fact I was there for over 20 years. I had a blast, made a ton of money and now I find myself, as is said in the video, "washed up". But for you the caution is the simple fact that "advertising" doesn't know what it is--or is supposed to be--anymore. The days of fat TV budgets are over, the web is at once over-rated and untamed as a media vehicle and a viable new language of persuasion has yet to be created. The big, traditional agencies are trimming their ranks and relying increasingly on their "promotional" holdings to show any profits. That said, if you're in if for the money you won't make any. Because anyone with genuine talent wants to be in it because they LOVE it. Read some David Ogilvy or start reading some other want ads, 'cause you ain't gonna' make it in advertising unless, as the great man said, you have "a fire in the belly". And these days that fire might be better applied other passions. |

Technically it's possible to achieve independent wealth in any arm of business (or any type of enterprise for that matter) if that is what you value and want to achieve in your life. And yes, advertising can pay well.
My suggestion would be to follow the interests / subjects / pastimes which you love the most. If you love them and give them your all, then you will become good at them - and that will lead you to opportunities to make money.
If you go into advertising with the explicit purpose of making money then you're probably doomed to fail - getting into advertising and succeeding in this industry is just too hard if you don't love it.

this is what the career is like. also, in school there are countless group campaign projects. you WILL have trouble with incompetent group members bringing you down. long hours and little pay. major in marketing instead - that is the business side of it and it is better. |

Advertising is Marketing's servant..no respect, lots of work and not nearly as much fun as you would think.
I've been in Marketing for nearly 25 years, been around the world, attended wonderful events, and enjoyed many perks along the way..
Almost everything you see and hear today is somebody's marketing plan..

Like anything else in this world...it depends on whether you are any good at what you do...some advertising executives starve while others prosper...there' no magic occupation just different individuals with different levels of intellect, drive and therefore success. |
