getting links from relevant site such as directories might help your site's SERP ranking through backlinks however submitting your site on directories doesn't mean that you'll get listed immediately and it doesn't mean that ranking will improve immediately...try to gather more backlinks and promote your site...

YES! Get links to your site whenever you can. The best links ARE from related web pages and they are harder to get. However, directories that have your business category is a related website, because there are other businesses within your same category, so that makes it relavant. Since you are a plumber, you definitely need to target local directories in your area.
