Selling is a subset of Marketing.
The scope of marketing is 4 Ps - product price place and promotion.
if it is services marketing then u have 7ps - 4ps + process, people andphysical environment.
so when u make a marketing decision u are making decison about some of the or all of the Ps. but when u r making a selling decision u r just concerned with one P i.e promotion.
another major difference is Marketing is craeting value while selling is delivering the craeted value. |

Marketing is more like the advertising for a service/product. Selling is when you actually "sell" to a consumer. |

Marketing is the act of Selling through advertising, product display, product packaging, etc..
If your marketing does not SELL, it should be fired, just like a sales person who does not sell.
Selling is the final consummation of the act. But a great direct marketing piece, or marketing website does not require a "salesperson" because the marketing does all the selling.
It's a very fine line to tread.. |

Marketing is NOT selling. Two totally different things and should not be confused. You can't measure the quality of your marketing campaign in sales because marketing has to do with other aspects of the business as well. Internal organization, public relations, advertising, products and services development and sales all fall under the reign of a successful marketing strategy. You can think of marketing as a binding system between the different stages a product has to go through from market research, conception/production to customer use through advertising, pr, sales, customer support, etc., etc., etc. It's the canvas the business is "painted" on, if you will. |
