Does the marketing of domestic products reinforce gender stereotypes??
im doing this for my media A Level and anyones opinion on the topic would be muchly appreciated

My full answer would take too long, so I'll just give you a few examples.
If you go to Toys'R'Us, you will see that on the household toys (toy refrigerators, toy stoves, toy food & cooking utensils) it will say, "For girls only" on the box.
Have you ever seen men doing laundry soap commercials?
They ONLY use men to advertise any type of tool commercial.
There are many more examples. Just take a quick flip through some of your local magazines, etc...
Good luck on your tests.

Go Bears!
I think so (but I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing). If you watch daytime TV (Soaps for example), you see a lot of household products marketed to women. When you see beer commercials though, that seems aimed at men.

well would you store Detergent on a dirty shelf unless you are selling Rubber gloves or the Dust on the can of its logo ?

there is a fine line between reflecting and directing demographic trends. I believe commercials have a huge impact on our social values, which is a sad statement on our culture. It would appear that marketing is attempting to reach across the stereotypes and appeal to all users.

NO! Why would it? Domestic products need to be marketed. Stereotypes and marketing is kinda like the chicken or the egg. Marketing is trying to convey a message to get someone to be brand aware or to buy. An image that conveys a situation, lifestyle, and/or sense of identity sells. Is a metrosexual man going to sell domestic products better than a mother or wife? If society said men and particularly metrosexual men create a desirable image, then the opposite would be the case. Marketing at times tries to break stereotypes - if there is market potential. But other times, it MUST reinforce tradition. Case in point, BarbaraK created powertools for women - booming business. Why? The market potential was there for powertools designed with appeal to women. That broke the stereotype that powertools were for men. Domestic products don't enjoy such flexibility. But some exceptions are coming out. Kitchenware is one where products can and should appeal to men and women. The domestic kitchen is not the domain of women anymore. Men love to be backyard chefs. There are other examples. But you should get the idea.
