Personally I think internet marketing is the way to go but if you are looking for drawbacks, its the X factor. Entire weekends where online usage drops dramatically. I am not talking about Christmas, or an invasion someplace where everyone is watching the news. I am talking about random weekends where a large percentage of the population just inexplicably shuns their computers. But having said that--- it isn't a big deal in the overall scheme of things. |

Internet Marketing is something risky and some of us gamble for it when we think that we really wanted to make money, my suggestion is go for the internet business which requires less of your time and the one that will not make you feel headache with web designing, or which require IT knowledge. Second, choose the internet based company which offer you the opportunity and at the same time giving you the convenience to start the business. Third, choose the business, which does not require big money to start it.

From the marketer's perspective:
- it's "passive" - except for email, which has problems of its own, you have no way to actively target and contact people proactively. You have to wait for them to click your ad or search for your terms. This limits your ability to reach large segments of potential customers.
- it's a single media - meaning you're exposed to high risk of regulation, market changes (like Google algorithm changes, carrier "quality of service" changes, etc) that you can't control. Don't believe me? Ask the fax marketers. Ask the telemarketers. Ask the emailers. Even TV infomercials have been outlawed before, and could be again anytime Congress decides.
- not everybody uses the internet! depending on your market, it may be less than 10% of your targets will ever see your ad. Sure, some markets are internet-heavy.
- as others mentioned, trust is a big problem. people tend to trust other media more than internet. The best, of course, is word of mouth referrals. |

The biggest single drawback to internet marketing is freight. Unless you have a unique product that has no competition or you can get product almost for free you can't compete with stores. |
