Discourages.
It only takes 2 interested bidders to have an auction. If you turn one of them away because they take the statement personally...then you will not be getting top dollar for your item, as there will be no second bidder to bid against. |

I think it works. I usually use that and put some restrictions on where I will ship to with a notification that I will cancel bids if necessary. People tend to be more serious about bidding if you are about selling. |

i think it is pointless. some people set up fake account so they can bid and then leave negative feedback so they aren't going to take any notice of what you put. |

Tell you the truth, I think it is impertinent. Why would anybody be looking at the item, if they were not thinking of bidding on it? |

That's kind of like saying in a personal ad, "Please reply only if you are serious-minded" or "no game playing". Of course it is exactly the people who aren't serious who would ignore such a message. So I think saying "serious bidders only" probably has no effect whatsoever in either encouraging or discouraging bids. |

I always wonder about that myself. I sell a lot of things on Ebay and have never said that. I don't think people really pay much attention to that phrase one way or the other. |

It just say to the fakes to stay away from bidding |

we should hope that it limits the bidding to those parties who have only a genuine interest in the item(s). Therefore, i would say it discourages overall number of bids. But who would bid on it if they weren't serious about it? I always felt it was a silly phrase in auctions. Sort of like some of the useless advertising fluff phrases that are used. |

As a long time eBay seller I would say it discourages somewhat. Just because it sounds like the person is a little ornery.
Its just something posted to test the waters for instance someone is selling an expensive item and has been ripped off before. There really is no point in posting "serious bidders only" anyways in my humble opinion. Its not binding. |

it discourages bids that arent serious, which surely is a goiod thing. It doesnt put me off if i really want something |

definetely encourages. many people who are immature enough to try and bid on that stuff won't risk actually winning the auction, so they will tend not to bid. people who actually want the item will probably look at it harder |

Not really, cause if you are going to bid on an item and nobody else bids on it you have to pay for the item... so I think you got to be a serious bidder. |

I think it may discourage low biders, but who really knows.... |

Well it depends...
If you're a newbie and you see something like "SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY" you can easily be offended because of a lack of understanding on why a seller would say something like that. You may very well be a serious bidder and a sign giving a firm message that sounds like "Kids stay away or I'll tell your mommy" may rub a newbie the wrong way... at the same time, if someone is desperate enough, there isn't much you can say to sway a buyer from bidding on something... even if it sounds like a scam.
On the other hand...
Common sense isn't so common, and there are people with pending retardation evaluations in the world. These folks may want to bid on something just to see if the darn button actually works. A firm message saying "SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY" won't discourage every occurance of a dead-beat bidder, but it makes most people think twice before doing something stupid. And that's the main reason a seller would put this action of saying "SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY" into practice.
I would practice the same technique of saying "SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY", but with caution, as to not offend sensitive people who are actually serious about bidding. A small notation explaining your reasoning behind the message could go a long way with sensitive bidders.
From one seller to the next...
I hope my input has given you some insight to help you on your way to becoming a successful eBay seller with the least amount of dead-beat bidders. Good Luck. |
