Brands are groups of products that somehow differ from other products. You need to offer something to your customers that they can't get from another place, or can't get in the same way as another place. If you're exactly the same as the store down the street, there's no reason for somebody not to go to that store instead.
Brands also offer an easy handle for advertising. |

For a starting point on brands, I can recommend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brand for some info. The reason it's important is because your brand is what people think and feel when they see your product and logo. It can be just as important as your product, maybe more. Think of NIKE - http://www.nike.com/index.jhtml - their brand is so strong that they can sell not only shoes with it, but hats, socks, t-shirts, almost anything on the association of their brand. People see NIKE and think of those commercials: the world's greatest athletes, chiselled men and women pushing themselves to the limit and achieving success, Michael Jordan making a slam dunk. |

Branding is a concept that (brand so to speak a company in your mind).
Associating a product or service with your name
Great examples are:
"When it's positively got to get there.." Fedex
Walmart: doesn't matter if they carry low end or high end merchandise, they branded themselves as having the lowest price (there always rolling back prices).
Most cola, people associate with the name Coke.
Most Companies invest money in selling products, Great companies invest in Branding their name so that its the first name thing you think of when purchasing a product. |

For example, most jeans are made of Denim cloth, probably stitched on the same make of machines, are cut and modelled on same or similar shapes, yet the value put on each make differs from 100% to 500%. It is this premium one wants from brand. |
