I sell to the academic research market (b2b) and I routinely "stuff mailboxes" with flyers I design and have printed at Staples. I believe a 1-3% response rate is realistic and my guess is it will be closer to 1% than 3%. Still, that gives you ~50 leads you have generated at a relatively low financial cost. Most important, I find the leads that come from this kind of a campaign are much stronger than e-mail blasts or postcards. Hopefully, you have a good team who can close the sale! For me, making just one sale on one of the smaller ticket price items I sell more than covers the cost of the flyers. >1 sale on a small ticket price item or 1 or more sales on some of the larger ticket price items I sell can cover my costs for several of these campaigns...not to mention a trip to Disney for my family! :-) My point is, do the math to determine if it is worth it. How many sales do you need to make to cover costs, etc?

This technique, for me, has been one of the most effective I use and I would politely disagree with the gentleman who refers to it as a waste of time. I would also srongly agree with Mrs. P's comments.

1-3% depends on what you offer and how you present it.
Make sure it's direct response.
Also, just remember that you deposit MONEY into the bank and not response percentages.

It's like 1-2%. Personally it's a wast of time. You ll be better of networking.

Hard numbers will be hard to nail, too many variables.
I do have some suggestions however. Do a little research before just handing out 5000 flyers.
-In your target area, what is the going rate for services. (you don't have to be cheaper, just in the same ballpark)
-When distributing the flyers, try to make face to face contact. Let them see you. Make it more personal, not just a piece of paper. You will make points with people if you show you care enough. Leaving them on cars or doors or even in mail boxes, make it seem inpersonal and people just toss them without even looking at them.
-On the flyers themselves, make sure you have the information necessary. And if possible something like a logo or some catch phrase that will stick in peoples memories.
1) company name, business owner, phone number to contact.
2) years in service, references optional but always good if going after comercial businesses.
3) services available
4) rates and hours, discounts if any available.

I do think that flyers are the most inexpensive way to advertise, and can be effective if done properly, you may want to consider adding a business card to the flyer when you hand them out.
Or even a one time coupon with a special price, this may help you get your foot in door, and then its up to your services and job performance that should keep you in the door.

2-3% , but it depends a lot on the product and what will the demand will be on it ; i mean if it is a necessary product that people really need or if it is luxury product; also it depends a lot on the location; you have to be careful and choose the most suitable area to distribute the flyer's; make sure it have a good percentage of your target market

It depends if they are delivered amongst other flyers but you should gain about 2-3% if its home based services

How about giving us a real scenario here? You don't provide enough information.

If your flyer is distributed in a neighborhood which has just been struck by a hurricane and there are lots of downed trees, you'll get lots of calls if your flyer offers reasonably priced tree removal, chainsaw work, etc.

If you distribute that same flyer in another, non-impacted neighborhood, your results will be different.

The key is in knowing your target market and then hitting it at the right time with a needed product or service.

Micky you are not right you need to love marketing and advertising to know the meaning of flyers and the point is that yes you may have a flyer but is it effective if not then your flyer is a waist of time see the diff.....that's where I got all my clients! Thalia
