For a site to hit the top you need several things:
a) A relevant page title for the keyword(s) you wish to reach
b) Page content in HTML text (not graphics) which expands on your title and is well written.
c) Links to your site from sources with a category or site content relating to your site.
d) You can also place ads with your link in the ad. Craigslist.org is a good example of a place to post. Just be sure to categorize your ad properly there or it will be deleted.
e) Write an interesting article rich in the keywords of the site you are promoting.
f) Traffic! More traffic means better rankings.
g) Offer tell a friend, link to us, and exchange links features on your site footer. Free referrals and links in are a bonus!
h) Try the link below for a smart method of cashing in on your increased SEO and other traffic. You may also consider becoming an advertiser to increase your traffic. |

Create something that people think is awesome. Create a story, list, article or something else that is worth a link to you. That will drive people to your site, for sure!

It takes time and patience, you can't get to the TOP of Google, Yahoo or any SE overnight.
One method to increase the chances of getting into the search engines on a variety of keywords is to post daily to your blog.
On my site, online-internet-business-opportunity.com I offer fresh perspectives to running a successful internet business. I post daily. In 15 days I attracted almost 1,500 visitors to my site. For February I will attract close to 5,000 and that is without ANY SEO or other methods of attracting traffic.
Secret: I post daily, sometimes 2x or 3x or even 4x on topics that are relavent to my visitors, and subscribers to my alerts.
Over time as I build a strong base of visitors (because I offer quality content, that is usually only available for a fee - people come back) I am able to sell to them as they have trust in me.
I fully expect to be able to monetize my site within 2-3 months time and make a living off of it within one year, if not sooner.

All of the above are correct. But it's like blind people trying to describe an elephant.
You will find plenty of "answers" by people who have little or no experience actually putting their websites on the web.
It takes a lot of time and effort, for sure. And even then your site will be in Google's sandbox for a while. It is not difficult to get Goog to recognize your home page. Then Goog wants YOU to prove you deserve to get higher rank.
Even with the SEO companies working like heck to get your site a high ranking your chances of getting on a Goog result first page are slim to none for generic keywords or key phrases.
SEO is not dead however.
I've noticed that this very site that we are on now, Yahoo Answers, gets a lot of notice from Goog for lontail key phrases.
Let's try an experiment. Let's put this term from your headline into a Goog search and see how long it takes for it to be listed for that particular search phrase.
"get a good ranking on google and yahoo"
