Well there are a couple of strategies you can use depending on the business and your budget
If it is a service business you best steps would be to "Brand" yourself
- Radio spots, shows, remote
- Newspaper ads, News Release
- Flyers, Craigslist
- Blog - comments expressing your knowledge
- Website - listing of services and products you offer
- Xango, Google, Yahoo, etc...
If it is a products
- Radio, TV, remotes, shows
- Flyers, Brochures, Business Cards
- Newspaper ads, Press Release, Online Classified Ads, Craigstlist..etc
- Blog - comments expressing your knowledge
- Website - listing of services and products you offer
- eBay, Pay Per Click, Amazon, Google.
Like I said it depends on the business and budget
But no matter what you are offering a service/product you will need to know how to market and get loads of potential customers.

The most efficient and inexpensive option could be a direct mail campaign depending on your type of market. Direct mail can target your product to your specific audience. Other methods would be self advertising. Purchase window decals for you automobile, wear company apparel, and give away free promotional products.
Radio & TV ads can be costly.
Once again depending on your business type you may offer your services on craigslist which is free. Other free options would be to starting a blog, MySpace, you tube, forums, etc.
