Things that are easy to ship at a low cost are always best.
Bargain books that are not readily available, and can be shipped via "Media Mail" unless the winning bidder wants to pay for Priority Mail are always good.
Further, whatever you choose, try to make a niche for yourself instead of spreading into various topics. Get a reputation for products in one area, and always have related products up for auction at the same time. When people see one of your items, think, what items might they be likely to bid on at the same time?
It's the same concept as impulse buying and add-on sales. For example one time I ran across some bargain cookbooks, and I put up auctions for a few dozen different cookbooks at the same time. Most of my bidders went for 3 or 4 of the books instead of just one.
Or say you're selling computer accessories. If you've got an optical mouse up for auction, you should also have mousepads, gel wrist rests, maybe some software for custom amusing mouse pointers (boxed and unopened of course) |

If I had enough stuff to sell that I could get at a price low enough to make a profit, I would love to make a business of it.
If you're going to do it, remember that it should be stuff that people are always looking to buy, cause you can't really reach out and advertise to people. They have to search for what you are selling. Or, it has to be really unique. Like auction house type stuff, or one of a kind stuff that you can't just walk into a store and buy, or order from Amazon. |
