viscomunderground | Good idea for Seniors Advertising Postcard? |
I work at a small newspaper and we often do supplement issues with specific themes, Seniors being one of them. We make up postcards to send to advertisers to get them to buy ad space. Every single time we end up resorting to using a stock photo of an older couple with type over it. Anybody have a fresh new idea of what we could put on the front of the card to entice people to advertise with us? |

Your customers are not seniors they are the advertisers that are looking to target seniors. Why not use a postcard that states more with text and facts on how your newspaper is doing a senior showcase and get your message in front of 10,000 seniors in the metro area etc. i don't know your specific senior readership of your newspaper but i would position it like that. i work for a newspaper as well and that is something that is overlooked at times. right now your customer is the prospective advertisers so they may not look at the senior picture and get interested as opposed to statistics of targeting that demographic. One idea that came to mind is to describe the target market in terms of what advertisers are looking for.....
As an example would be to include on your postcard: how many seniors subscribe to your publication, a mini case study of how successful past advertisers have been, customer testimonials, or how many repeat customers.
Having said that, I do like the image of the seniors to immediately grab the advertisers attention, but minimize it and bring the suggestions above to the forefront.
One more idea, if you have enough time and a big enough list, you could test a few postcards with different ideas and send to a small subset of your list to judge which postcard test is pulling more advertisers in, then use the winning postcard to send to your entire list.

Try a "type only" kind of ad. Maybe you could go with lines like:
-Reach them before they forget wich newspaper they read
-If you sell condoms, don't bother advertising in our next issue
or any funny lines you can think of (but stay away from "reach them before it's too late", that's just in bad taste!). |

Instead of people, try a variety of other "things". For example, a set of false teeth soaking in a glass. Or a walker with tennis balls on the legs. However, stay away from the adult diaper theme... too many people are doing that these days. |
