Your best bet for a promotional piece is to put your current work from your portfolio onto a interactive CD to hand out.
They idea of CD's is that if what you have to offer doesn't always look good to one person it may for another and is almost always passed on for others to view. Before you know it your one CD has been seen by 10+ people. Have friends and family help you out by handing them out when the moment is presented. Remember skies the limit on ideas for presenting yourself; no idea is a bad idea. Well except for maybe pens and pencils with your name on it. Corny these days.
As a freelancer you can also register on freelance.com to put the word out and start making bids on projects that interest you.

one very important thing that will enhance your success more than any amount of graphical talent you possess...and that is to learn how to design marketing materials for people that are actually effective, not just look great.
In the printing business you get alot of people that have tried to save money by designing stuff themselves...and then they wonder why it failed.
There are professional graphic artists in the world for a very good reason....you are a much needed commodity...if we could just train the business world to utilize you. heh.
