Carrie | Has anyone done a mystery shop? Can you tell me more? |
I have just been hired by a temporary agency. They put me down for marketing as well as clerical/secretarial. The lady who hired me told me that I will do Mystery Shop. If anyone has ACTUALLY done this or KNOW SOMEONE who ACTUALLY did it, please tell me some examples and more about it if possible. Thanks. Additional Details This isn't bogus. The Temp Agency I am working for is one I worked for years ago. They get hired by the clients who want Mystery Shoppers and they choose an employee to go out. It is on the up and up. Thanks though, I thought the same thing at one time. |

Go to http://www.volition.com/mystery.html and there's information about mystery shopping. Plus there's a huge list of REAL mystery shopping companies. The rule of thumb I've found is NEVER pay a company to be a mystery shopper. The ones that ask for money are either scams or just aren't worth the money you'd pay them...
below are some of my favorite companies' links. ...

almost all mystery shopping is bogus.
I'd check very carefully that employment agency's record with the BBB. |

I did it years ago for a pizza delivery company. I had to fill out a questionnaire once a month of how long it took to arrive and if it was hot and had the right toppings and rate the professionalism and courtesy of the driver and the phone person. I just got free pizza and a couple bucks for my trouble. It's different doing it as a regular job. You'll have to go to many stores and buy specific items or at least items from specific departments. You will have to answer questions about each area of each store. For example, how many employees were working, how long it took for them to acknowledge you and offer assistance, was the section well stocked and neat, was there a line when you checked out, etc. You may have to drive a bit of distance depending on the area that your agency covers, the number of contracts they have and the number of employees they have doing this so ask how far you need to go and if they reimburse mileage. Also be very careful about how they reimburse your purchases. I got my money but it sometimes took a month, not bad when it was just a pizza that I would have bought anyway but if they have you buying a ton of stuff look out. |

Mystery shopping is a great way to earn PIN money, but I don't know anyone that has made a living out of it.
It's very easy to do, and despite what some poeple will tell you, not all mystery shopping companies are bogus.
One of my clients is a mystery shopping company, and they sign up over 1000 shoppers a month - I know these shoppers get paid, as my daughter temped there in the summer and was in charge of sending out cheques! |

I've never done a mystery shop but I worked for a company that was shopped every month so I can tell you kinda what you'd be doing. You will basically be going into a retail store or restaurant (depends on what company you're working for) and you will be given a list of things to look for. For ex: say you have to go into a clothing store, things like were you greeted upon entering the store? while shopping did an associate offer to help you? did they start a fitting room for you? was the store neat and tiddy? did you get offered a promotion????? Stuff like that, you will complete your survey and send it in. It's seems like it might be fun to be on the other end of it. When I was working retail it was always a game to see who could figure out who the mystery shopper was. Have fun and make some extra $$. |
