I was thinking bout how much money is spent on commercials and how many people have to hear so many of them while listening to the radio or watching television and wondered if people actually become convinced to buy a product because of them. I can not think of a product I have ever bought because of the commercial.
If you have been convinced to buy a product because of a commercial what was the product and what about the commercial convinced you to buy it? |

The purpose of advertising is brand recognition. If you know the name of the product you are more likely to buy it.
The same applies to elections. An incumbent has a a better chance of getting elected because the voters say "I heard of him".
It is your subconscious that commercials appeal to.
Cases in point:
* if you have a runny nose you use a tissue not a Kleenex.
* Many people still say the Frigidaire instead of refrigerator.
* If you cut your self you use a bandage not a Band-Aid.
* Kool-Aid is a brand of instant non carbonated drink.
The list goes on.

I wouldn't waste my time reading most mindless publications or watching a television with the same mindless drivel on that has been running for 50 or so years using only different people and slight variations to the original stories. |

There are many products that are advertised that we use and we might feel that the commercial has no bearing on our choice. However, when given a choice between a product that we're not familiar with and one that we've heard or seen a commercial about, we'll probably pick the one we've heard of.
Think about when a product such as the IPod, Iphone, Wii, or other item is first introduced, we are influenced by it without realizing it. Although the commercial may not make us run out and buy it right away, eventually when we do get ready to buy that type product, we will base our decision on the fact that we have at least heard of the IPod or IPhone.
Smart consumers will compare the less familiar product that may not have all the advertising with the popular one and make an informed decision based on the product features and price of the two. |

I don't know honestly. I often times will watch a commercial and if its interesting google whatever was advertised. Other than that I flip the channel. I hate when you are watching something and the lastest tummy trimmer pops us.
LOL, Did you see that AT&T commercial? The one about high speed internet. Its not that fast. Trust me. |

Everything you own has been advertised - so you were exposed to the advertising way before you ever made the purchase and were predisposed to buy that product.
Just because you didn't call Papa John's Pizza the moment you saw their commercial doesn't mean the idea of Papa John's isn't in your mind. And assuming there's a local Papa John's in your area, if you look in the phone book to order a pizza and you see their ad - all the millions of dollars they spend will now come back to you: "Better ingredients, better delivery ... Papa John's"
Want proof? What are the ingredients in a Big Mac? Who is the King of Beers? Which insurance company is "on your side?" |

Most often I do not respond to commercials.
But those darn food ads get to us at times and we dash off to get the latest burger.

Have you ever wondered why Coca Cola, McDonald's advertise, it is just to get into people conscious that we are still there. If Coca Cola stoped advertising, Pepsi will beat it in the long run like 10 or 20 years from now. So the answer to your question is that the reactions to Ads on TV or Radio is not as fast as you think. |

Many commercials have actually had the opposite affect...if the commercial is really annoying and played a lot I begin to hate the product. I see it in the store and the annoying commercial pops into my head and I move on. |
