The best way to definite affiliate marketing is as freelance commission-based marketing. What you're doing is using your website (blog, coupon site, or whatever) or Pay-Per-Click campaign to refer customers to a sales site where they can make a purchase. You, as the affiliate marketer, get a percentage of every sale that goes through your website.
Affiliate marketing can be a great way to make money if you put the time, effort and work in to it. It isn't a magical money-making scheme where you collect checks for doing nothing at all. For instance, after 2 years of building traffic and content, I've got multiple websites which bring in five-figures a year.
It isn't rocket science, though, and anyone can do it with a little work and patience.

Generally you use your own blog or website to promote other peoples services or products. The Google ads you see on websites are a good example - the site owner only gets paid when people click on them to read the full advert.
