I work for an authorized ADT dealership as a sales representative. I do this as it is flexible and I have lupus and a son with autism and had to leave my career in corporate sales. Does anyone have any ideas for me to help build my business and get customers interested? What type of marketing might help me. I can only sell in my local area which is about a 45 minute radius of Memphis. I offer a good product, I have the best price for ADT equipment and offer their monitoring. I am also very customer service oriented and bend over backwards to help my customer even after the sale. I just need ideas to increase my business. Door to door knocking has not been successful. I am currently working with flyers also but have not had much results with that. Also, I have even been telemarketing. I am more than willing to accept suggestions from anyone. I really want to make a decent living for my family and my son as its expensive having an autistic child and my own medical bills. I

Residential security system sales is a tough profession. You can be successful, but don't think that there is any quick or easy way to make sales in this business.
That being said, there are generally two times when people make a decision to buy a security system for their home. The first is when then are building a new home or buying an existing home that doesn't already have a security system. The second is just after they have had a bad experience, such as a burglary.
To reach the first market, you need to keep track of new home construction and real estate sales in your area. There are often local business newspapers that show building permits that have been issued. Some of these papers also show real estate sales transactions. Use this information to contact people who are building homes or who have recently purchased a house. Also try and develop relationships with homebuilders and real estate agents that are active in your area.
Reaching the second market is a little tougher. In general, people looking for a security system after they have been a victim of a crime usually reach out to someone who they trust. This can be a friend or neighbor, or professional adviser such as a lawyer or insurance broker. One thing that can work well is to network with providers of other services, such as locksmiths or window installers. These folks often get called in just after a burglary has occurred and can possibly be a source of referrals.
Finally, get active in as many local community and networking groups as you can. Develop a short presentation on home security. This should offer generic security tips and not just be an ADT sales pitch. Offer to give this presentation at group meetings and community events.
It will take you some time to perfect your sales techniques and develop a referral base but this will eventually happen if you stick with it long enough.

Check out new communities that are being built. All those new home owners may want some security for their new purchase. You can even look for new communities through sites like www.kbhome.com and www.lennar.com and many others. |

Yup do some research and find out what neighbourhoods have high break in rates or crime rates and start there. Make sure you are well prepared and keep you customers happy so that they will refer you to others. Also make sure these neighbourhoods are not assisted living or "slums" nice neighbourhoods with families that are concerned with break ins is the place to start for sure.

i'm not sure if this is the marketing strategy you were looking for...but you can always break into their homes, steal their stuff, then sell them a security system. THEN you can sell their stuff for additional money. |

Um not really. It's kinda weird, but seems like most of the time somebody buys somethin from somebody who is a dealership kind of person, unless its a greatly trusted business, then it's either breaks pretty soon, or something like that. weird, idk. soz, can't help ya |
