How does your website rate with organic search engine listings in Yahoo and Google and MSN? For example, do a search based on keywords related to retail knives and see where your website comes up. If you're not on the first few pages, you need to do a lot of work.
If you have a small budget, you can check into Yahoo's Overture PPC program and Google's Adword's PPC program. I have clients that spend less then $10.00 a day and do very good. You can set daily spending limits and also target your ads to specific times of the day and demographics.
You might want to consider joining one of Yahoo's SEO Groups. I belong to a few of them and they do help. Just go to the Groups and do a search for SEO or Website Marketing. Once you join, ask away as you might get some very good pointers back. You can also list your website URL to have others take a look at your site and comment.
Take advantage of any other website that might have a message forum where you can add a custom signature to your posts. Be helpful and comment on other's questions. Message forum posts often get picked up quickly with the major search engines. So do blog posts.
Join any of the social networking sites that allow you to post your URL. It would be cool if you could make a YouTube video and talk about knives. Perhaps create a short tutorial on knives and what knives make for a good holiday gift.
One very good free site about SEO that I've frequented before is http://www.seo-guy.com. Check them out.

Teach yourself Search Engine Optimization. Hit the library for books on guerilla marketing. Trawl (not troll)) message boards and usenet groups and find non-irritating ways of promoting your web site. Do link exchanges. There are tons of ways to promote yourself (look into other forms of income from the site, such as affiliate marketing, adsense, etc.) |

Your boss has to understand that a website needs time to develop, and you shouldn't expect to make millions from a site, that you have set up today.

I work for AT&T and do specifically what you're having an issue with. First of all, how many visitors does he want every year? A retail store that is locally based won't really pull a lot of outside buyers unless you have an online store.
We can GUARANTEE a specific number of visitors through the major search engines if you want, and it IS very cheap. Just depends on your budget and how many searches you need. I work for the Yellowpages.com branch of AT&T so this is what i do all day. Let me know if you need some help.
