There are many different ways to market your website effectively but the most cost-effective one is by far search engine optimization.
The process of search engine optimization is simply the ability to take your website and turn it into a website that the search engines love. Search engines will then be able to not only index the different pages contained within your website but they will also be able to rank them high up in the search engine results.

First, the free ways that you can drive traffic:
Make sure everybody you know is aware of your website (and what your products and services are), send everyone in your address book an email letting them know that your website is now up, and provide the URL and a blurb about your business in the email - - be sure to tell them you'd appreciate their help as you start up, and ask them to please forward to anyone they know who might be interested. Maybe a week or two later, you could send all that again, along with a coupon for $5 off any online purchase greater than $25...
Do you have a local newspaper editor or television report who focuses on local businesses? Send them an article or even better, a press release, announcing that a new local business has been launched and letting them know your URL! (note: no need to stick with just local press if you have a unique product or a unique twist to your product - - send a press release to major network television shows, who knows?! Maybe you'll find yourself on the Today show!)
Write and submit an article to your local newspaper, and include a photo of you with one of your products.
Create a MySpace account for your business, and invite people who appear to be interested in products like yours, to be your "Friends." You can blog and send out bulletins when you announce a new product, or when you have a special offer to announce.
Look for websites that sell products or services similar to yours, and whenever possible, sign up for their email newsletter. This will help you learn how an established website does their marketing.
No matter what email you send out to your family and friends, ALWAYS include a link to your site at the end of your message. (Create a "Signature" so it automatically populates every time you send a new email or reply to one).
Now for some strategies that will involve money:
Go to Yahoo and/or Google to bid on pay-per-click advertising. There's no need to outbid anyone to be at the very top of the list, it's fine (and will save you money) if you can just manage to be on the 1st page that comes up.
Print business cards (VistaPrint is an economical choice) and hand them to everyone you know. Consider attaching them to magnets so people will keep them in constant view on the front of their refrigerators. Every time you make a sale, be sure to enclose a handwritten "thanks!" on the packing slip AND a business card.
If there's an eBay University seminar coming to a city near you, I highly recommend that you attend. Many of the classes are about search engine optimization and website marketing, and the knowledge you get from those can be used anywhere. Consider opening an eBay Store - - you could get more customers than you ever imagined!
Hope that helps, all the best for your new internet business! |
